I'm glad that Tom Cruise is so mentally healthy that he has no need of any kind of outside help. However, by his statement of "there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance", he is stepping out onto a limb which science will pull out from under himn. I'm thinking about menopause in particular. I think it's fairly well proven that a hormonal change occurs in menopause. Granted, this is an expected change that every woman goes through, but as far as I can see, it pretty much proves that chemical changes do occur, which cause emotional distress. This is one example of a hormone change, distortion, however you'd like to put it. They change and it's a medical fact. I feel the need to try in some way to illustrate the changing nature of our very bodily chemistry, since its so apparent on natural levels such as puberty, menopause, and hormonal changes during pregnancy. I am, by the way, a 39 year old woman who has never been pregnant, not experienced menopause...but there was the puberty thing! I can't believe that a man who has been through puberty can totally discount bodily/chemical changes which occur at certain periods in our lives which reslult in changes in the body/mind which are completley evident. I'm sorry that his philosphy doesn't allow for people to be sick from depression, bi-polar disease, schizophrenia, etc. He claims that ritalin is a street drug. I have no doubt about that. My brother was a "ritalin baby" ( does he know that term??) It's a tragedy that those children were mis-diagnosed and mis-medicated. My brother is the smartest person I know, as an adult. I have no doubt about this. He wasn't, however, able to be a normal student in normal class because of his hyperactivity. It is my opinion that were we more educated on the issue of hyperactivity as related to bi-polarism, we could help a lot of people to achieve the potential they deserve. While I know it's a movie, I believe its a non-fictional film (based on a real person) which illustrates beyond all other films, the Chemical Imbalances which can occur in the brain. Nobody knows the brain, and I'm sure it has hidden areas yet undiscovered which will surprise us in many ways.
