Hey, Ty's Mom
I'm so, so sorry you're feeling so badly, and I want you to believe me when I tell you it is only temporary WITH proper treatment. My suggestion would be, since your OB didn't seem concerned when your grandmother died (that's a huge red flag to watch for postpartum depression!), that you talk to your pediatrician or general practician about a possible referral to a doctor who understands how to treat postpartum depression.
PLEASE call me when you read this message at 843 881-2047 or email me at BuzerHel@aol.com. I'd really like to talk with you and help you through this. With medication, talk therapy (cognitive behavioral therapy, NOT psychotherapy) and support from other women who have suffered what you are experiencing now, you can become the person you used to be and have your life back -- I promise!
If you live in South Carolina, there are support groups available. If you live outside SC, there may be a support group near you. I'll be happy to help you find one as well as put you in touch with women who have survived PPD. Depending on where you live, I may be able to give you some doctors' names who may be able to help you.
I can identify with you in the loss of your cat. My cat, that I dearly love, disappeared several weeks ago. So I know how painful that is. I'm also very sorry about your losing your grandmother. Please don't feel guilty about not crying when she died. It's not that you didn't love her or won't miss her; it's just where you were, emotionally, at that time.
I highly recommend reading "Beyond the Blues", second edition, by Dr. Shoshana Bennett and Dr. Pec Indman. It's an easy-to-read, paperback book that is an actual treating manual for postpartum depression (PPD). It's written in short chapters, so it is excellent for women suffering from postpartum depression who cannot concentrate well. The book is available for $14.95 at www.beyondtheblues.com or you should be able to pick one up at Barnes & Noble. You may also try your local library. They just might have a copy. You might also check the library for a copy of "The PPD Husband" by Karen Kleiman for your husband to read.
If you will give me your mailing address, I'll send you some free PPD information.
Remember, PPD is a totally treatable, temporary illness. And you are NOT alone.
I'll be looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Love, Helena
